Trauma Doesn't Always Stay in the Past

You may know that something difficult happened, but still find yourself wondering why it continues to affect you today. Trauma can show up in ways that aren't always obvious—overthinking, people-pleasing, emotional numbness, difficulty trusting others, feeling constantly on edge, or struggling with self-worth.

Many people I work with are successful, capable, and caring individuals who feel stuck repeating patterns they don't fully understand. They often find themselves reacting more strongly than they would like, feeling overwhelmed by certain situations, or carrying a persistent sense that something is wrong with them.

The truth is that many of these patterns make sense when viewed through the lens of past experiences.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is not defined by the event itself, but by its impact.

Trauma may include:

  • Childhood emotional neglect

  • Emotional abuse

  • Physical abuse

  • Sexual abuse

  • Domestic violence

  • Medical trauma

  • Car accidents

  • Loss and grief

  • Witnessing distressing events

  • Growing up in unpredictable or emotionally unsafe environments

Even experiences that others may dismiss can leave lasting emotional wounds.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process and heal from distressing experiences.

When difficult experiences remain unprocessed, they can continue to influence how you think, feel, and respond to situations in the present. EMDR helps reduce the emotional intensity of these memories so they no longer feel as overwhelming or disruptive.

EMDR does not erase memories. Instead, it helps your brain store them in a way that allows you to remember what happened without feeling like you are reliving it.

EMDR May Help If You:

  • Feel stuck in painful memories

  • Struggle with shame, guilt, or self-blame

  • Experience anxiety or panic related to past experiences

  • Notice strong emotional reactions that seem out of proportion

  • Have difficulty trusting others

  • Feel "not good enough" despite your accomplishments

  • Grew up feeling unseen, unsupported, or emotionally neglected

My Approach

I understand that beginning trauma work can feel intimidating. Therapy moves at a pace that feels manageable and safe for you.

Before processing traumatic memories, we focus on building coping skills, emotional regulation, and a sense of safety. My goal is to help you feel supported throughout the process, not overwhelmed by it.

If you're tired of feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve you, healing is possible.
